Old Fashioned Coffee Cake

- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 teaspooon salt
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 3/4 cup plain yogurt
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3/4 cup nuts, chopped fine (optional)
- maraschino cherries
- Mix flour, white sugar, and salt in a large bowl until blended.
- Add the butter and cut in with a whisk, should resemble course crumbs.
- Remove 1 cup of the flour mixture to a separate bowl and set aside.
- Add the baking powder and baking soda into the remaining flour mixture.
- Add the yogurt, egg and vanilla and mix until smooth.
- Scrape batter into greased 10-inch springform pan.
- Add the brown sugar, cinnamon and nuts (optional) to the reserved flour.
- Sprinkle the crumbs over the batter pressing lightly.
- Add halved maraschino cherries to the top of the crumb.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 50-55 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Transfer to cooling rack for 2 hours.
